E-bay
E-bay is the first of the hugely successful online auction site. It’s marketing premise has been widely copied, but have never proved as success as the original.
In general terms, two groups of people visit the online auction site known as E-bay, buyers and sellers. In the original e-bay auction site, the sellers paid a small listing fee plus a portion of the sale price to e-bay to place for sale items on the internet. In return, e-bay makes the listing available to literally millions of potential buyers world-wide. The seller’s duty is to list the item they wish to sell as clearly and accurately as possible. Items such as shipping arrangements, details about condition and even pictures could be added to the description with some difficulty. The seller was allowed to name an opening bid amount and could set a ‘reserve price’ below which the item would not be sold, but would stay with the seller.
The bidders could determine through searches or browsing whether anyone had their desired item in the auction items which were up for sale and choose to bid on selected items. The bidder could set a maximum bid so that they did not have to constantly monitor the bidding price in order to keep bidding. At the close the auction period, typically either three or seven days, the person with the successful bid and the seller was notified by e-bay and it was then up to the buyer and seller to make shipping arrangements according to the terms of the listing.

As interest in E-bay increased and listings skyrocketed, more and more items were being made available. E-bay gradually expanded and modified their way of doing business. E-bay stores were added, which allowed small online sellers to have a stronger presence through the e-bay website.
The main auction site split into sites by category, such as e-bay motors. E-bay regional listings were promoted and e-bay marketers jumped into the profit picture by offering to arrange listings on e-bay for others who did not have the knowledge or interest in selling on e-bay, but were desirous of selling items for the income. In larger areas, e-bay stores opened which served as a drop-off point for items to be listed on e-bay.
E-bay is still expanding in some ways, but has pulled back and is returning to the auction mode which made it successful rather than investing further into the e-bay store model.
